Self-Actualization

The realization of a person’s spiritual, emotional, and physical potential, along with the sense of fulfilment (inner balance) that comes with it, is called “Self-Actualization.”

According to Carl Rogers, the founder of person-centered therapy, people already have within them the power to become who they want to be, as long as they choose to use that power. Rogers believed that all people strive to achieve self-actualization. Those who have already attained it are characterized by the following:

  • They are constantly growing and evolving.
  • They are open to experiences, avoid defensiveness, and view life’s events as learning opportunities.
  • They trust themselves. Even when they seek guidance from others, they ultimately make their own decisions rather than strictly following others’ advice.
  • They have harmonious relationships with others and accept that they cannot please everyone. Gaining the acceptance of certain key individuals is enough for them and frees them from the need to be liked by all.
  • They live fully in the present rather than dwelling on the past or living solely for the future.

“We need to forget what we think we are so that we can really become what we are.”

— Emerson
