Flirting: Why Doesn’t He Make a Move?

He seems interested. As soon as he sees you, he blushes. He keeps looking at you. He seeks contact, but that’s as far as he goes. Since he clearly likes you, why doesn’t he take the next step? Women may be considered the “weaker sex,” but men also have sensitivities and insecurities. However, they must appear strong and tough because “men don’t cry,” so no one should see what’s really going on beneath their steel surface.

What Are the Main Psychological Barriers That Hold Men Back from Flirting?

  1. He’s Terrified.

Woman = Emotion. Women express emotions easily. They are the embodiment of feelings—flowers, perfumes, soap operas, tears, laughter, chatter, and… emotion!

Men, on the other hand, are all about cars, speed, work, plumbing, electronics, football, beer, snacks, friends, politics, and… logic.

A man cannot talk about emotions as easily as you can as a woman. Men are logical and practical beings. 1 + 1 = 2. Snow is white, not cream. And if a woman doesn’t respond to his glances, it means she’s not interested.

For men, emotions don’t have clear rules. There’s no user manual, nor are they taught in YouTube clips. A golden rule: Never ask a man about his emotions. Let him feel safe enough to talk about them on his own. If you must ask him something, it’s better to ask what he’s thinking rather than what he’s feeling.

  1. He’s Waiting for You to Make the First Move.

One of the oldest social beliefs about flirting is that men must take the first step. But times are changing! Men are no longer the prehistoric cavemen who brought the catch of the day to the (stone) table.

Dressed in suits and ties, uniforms, or casual clothes, today’s man is a stressed professional who also faces strong, independent, and dazzling women. It doesn’t matter if he looks like Antonio Banderas, has the voice of Sean Connery, or the athletic build of David Beckham—he has already been rejected, and not just once, but many times!

Before dialling your number or asking you out, he wants to be 1000% sure that he has correctly read your signals. So don’t make it harder for him! If you’re genuinely interested, take a step too. It’s not enough to show off your curves or enhance your full lips with bright lipstick.

For example, ask him about his favourite football team, interests, or hobbies outside of work.

  1. He’s Intimidated by Perfection.

Women tend to be overly critical of themselves, obsessing over a few extra pounds, cellulite, or fine wrinkles around the eyes. Men may fantasize about Scarlett Johansson or Angelina Jolie, but in reality, they want a real woman in their arms and their bed.

Yes, men love the idea of being with a stunning woman, but they are also human—they want to love and be loved by someone who makes them feel safe and secure. In fact, if you seem too perfect in every way, you might actually scare him off.

So try to be more approachable. Give the impression that you are friendly and open to conversation.

  1. Men Take Things Literally.

Maybe you already made the first move by casually asking him what his plans are for the weekend, thinking you were subtly suggesting that he ask you out.

Maybe he replied, “I’ll be helping my sister move,” and you felt disappointed and confused. (How could he spend all that time staring at my legs and then ditch me for his sister?)

Well, guess what? When you asked, he took it literally and simply told you exactly what he had planned.

Instead, be more direct. Ask something like, “How about grabbing a coffee together this weekend?”

  1. He’s Confused About Sex and Love.

Social stereotypes portray men as naturally polygamous, driven mainly by their physical urges. Imagine the pressure men feel to meet these expectations…

At the end of the day, men and women are made of the same material. We are all human, and when it comes to love and romance, the differences are not as vast as they seem.

So don’t lose hope. With patience and the right approach, the man you’re interested in will overcome his psychological barriers and finally make a move!
